Home Helper Valerie made a connection with an older person in her community via Close to Hand in May. Here she tells us all about her experience registering with the site and all about her role as a local Home Helper.
How many of us can say they look forward to going to work? Since registering with Close to Hand to become a Home Helper, I certainly do! Close to Hand is a wonderful concept helping people to stay independent in their own home.
My client lives in the next village so she is almost a neighbour, yet we had never met before connecting through Close to Hand! It was important to her and her family to remain in the home where she has lived for over 30 years with her husband, and where her friends and neighbours can pop in regularly. I work as a companion either two or three afternoons a week so that her full time carer and husband can have some free time.
My afternoons are never the same. Sometimes we watch Countdown and other quizzes which she enjoys. We have made apple compote, scones and cakes, and other times we just sit and chat in the garden over a cup of tea discussing things which are important and relevant to her. She especially enjoyed an outing and visit to my home and seeing my garden and pond; gardening and flowers are a shared passion. However best of all she enjoyed meeting my two little dogs and having my cat sit on her lap. I enjoy making a difference to someone’s life and enabling them to have choice and independence in what they do.
It was easy to register and set up my profile with Close to Hand; the online process from start to finish was very straightforward. I like the fact that once registered you get notifications of positions available and how many miles they are from you and how many hours needed. Close to Hand has allowed me to find local work that is not only flexible but serves a real purpose. I am pleased to say this is my best job ever!
