Close to Hand is a community built on trust and on an ethos of local people helping local people. To keep it that way it’s important to put safety first for both parties. Always carry out your own checks and references on any potential Home Helper and carefully evaluate them to find the best fit for both of you.
All initial introductions are done via our secure message service. You can chat with local Home Helpers without disclosing any personal details, such as full name and address.
When you do feel ready to exchange contact details with a Home Helper, we recommend you first chat with them on the phone before agreeing to meet. It’s a good idea to chat about your requirements and discuss details about any particular days you are looking for help. Spend some time getting to know each other to determine if you will make a good match and enjoy one another’s company.
Don’t be afraid to ask your potential Home Helper for details of a reference who you can speak with and write to. This can be for either a character reference or from a past employer.
If and when you are ready to meet, we always recommend you meet in a public place, like a local café, and that you take along a friend or relative for a second opinion.
Whilst Close to Hand does verify the identity of all Premium Home Helpers, you should still feel comfortable asking to see proof of their identity and a DBS certificate if they hold one.
Individuals are responsible for carrying out checks and verification as they deem appropriate. A non-exhaustive list of recommended verification is suggested below.
You are solely responsible for interviewing and verifying the identity of Home Helpers and agreeing their terms of engagement where appropriate.
